Teen and Mom is back for season two!
The latest installment of the hit series stars Tia Roush, whose first book, “Cultivate Your Daughter,” was a New York Times Best Seller and is being adapted for television by the writer-director J.J. Abrams.
In a new interview with PEOPLE, the actress reveals the story behind the cover art for her new book, and talks about why she’s been using a different style of clothing for her upcoming role.
“I just think, ‘You know what?
I want to do something different.
I want the look to be something different,'” Roushr tells PEOPLE.
“I’m always trying to be different.
So, when I decided to do this new book [Cultivation Your Daughter], I wanted to bring a different look.
And, I felt like I wanted it to be a little bit more sophisticated, a little more modern, a bit more playful, a lot more edgy.”
The teen-themed book details her journey to discover her true self, the struggle of having an extremely small family, and the journey of being a teen mother in the modern era.
“My goal was to bring something different,” she says.
“And I think that’s a very important thing to say about this book, that I feel that my book was really about this kind of personal journey that I’ve been on, and about how I’m always looking for something more, that’s what I want my kids to do.”
In the book, Roushs husband, former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, is the only one in her family who is a fan of hip hop.
In the episode, the couple sings about a girl who is obsessed with hip hop culture, as well as an older couple that she calls “the best parents in the world.”
“I love hip hop, but I feel like, honestly, I really have to give more to my kids than I have,” she explains.
“Because if I give more, they’re going to be like, ‘No, you’re not getting it.’
And then I’m going to have to explain to them, ‘That’s why I didn’t get it, because I gave you more than I gave me.'”
Roushr explains she was also inspired by her older brother who she has a crush on.
“He is so much better at this than I am, because he’s so much smarter than I ever was,” she tells PEOPLE, “and I think I’m just so blessed to have a brother that I can go to, and to talk to, about all these different things.
It’s just crazy to me, and I just wanted to share that with my kids.”
Roush also revealed that the book is an “experiment in the real world,” as she’s looking to make sure her daughter doesn’t feel alone.
“It’s definitely something that I think about when I’m thinking about my daughter, because she’s so incredibly talented,” she admits.
“She’s so talented, and she can do so many things, and there’s so many different styles, so I want her to have that chance to be herself, be a kid, be independent, and have fun with the world.
And it’s just like, it’s such an exciting time in the history of humanity.
I think it’s really exciting.”
Teen and Mommies returns on April 20 on HBO.
